People in the UK have been urged to step up their water saving efforts by cutting down on the amount of time they spend in the shower.
Shower Power is a campaign from Waterwise that highlights the high energy savings that could be made by being more conscientious when washing.
Research conducted in order to draw attention to the initiative has shown that 71 per cent of women take showers in less than ten minutes, with 26 per cent only spending five minutes under the water.
Meanwhile, the respective figures for men stand at 75 per cent and 30 per cent.
Waterwise stated that 33 per cent of water used in the home is wasted on personal washing and the use of electrical showers means they also contribute to a household's CO2 emissions.
Jacob Tompkins, managing director of Waterwise, said: "Spending less time in the shower will use less water and less energy, therefore saving money on energy and metered water bills.
"A shorter shower will also reduce a person’s carbon footprint, which helps prevent global warming."
Waterwise recently welcomed Ofwat's draft determination for the 2009 Price Review, in which the regulator provided resources for suppliers to help consumers save water.
