With the funky economy these days, it's a good idea to learn how to economize.

I know. I know. Cutting back can mean less income for businesses and make the problem worse. So I am looking for ways to save money without hurting the economy.

Not easy.

So I am seeking your help on ways you have cut back in the light of economic realities. (See contact info at bottom of column.)

I'm first up.

I am thinking of cutting back on driving to save gas and using less water for double duty to save money and deal with the drought.

First, I am sitting here at home again with the car in the driveway. Saving gas.

Second, I will not wash it and will water plants at night and only what they need to stay alive. Saving water.

But you and I could do better. If your current landscape requires a lot of water, consider changing the plantings to Mediterranean and native plants. This will allow you to water less often and still have a garden.

Here are some other simple ways to save money that I found on the Web:

  • Make your daily coffee at home.
  • Use coupons at the grocery store.
  • Buy generic drugs.
  • Rent a DVD rather than going out.
  • Scale back on TV. Consider basic service.
  • Use a cell phone with prepaid minutes.
  • Switch to a free-checking bank account or one without a required minimum balance.
  • Use only your bank's automated teller machines.
  • When you drive, plan ahead. And avoid left turns. You will save on gas.
  • Take shorter showers.
  • Lower the heat setting on your water heater.
  • Ask your doctor for double doses on prescriptions and split the pills in half.
  • Cut back on haircuts.
  • Put your credit cards in a container of water and place in the freezer.
  • Use cash. You will spend less.
  • Don't buy bottled water. Tap water is OK.
  • Set the temperature a bit higher on the air conditioner.
  • Keep receipts and check them every week.
  • Clean with salt and white vinegar.
  • Use a pressure cooker.
  • Get your junk out of the garage and have a yard sale. Even better, talk to your neighbors and have a block yard sale.
  •
